Dawn grew up in a Canadian military family, living in communities throughout Canada and Germany. She is a band member of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation in Southern Ontario, where she and her family have resided for the past 27 years. She is of Indigenous descent on her maternal side; Ojibwe is from her grandfather, and Mohawk is from her grandmother. Dawn's paternal family ancestry stems from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, originating from Britain, Ireland, and Scotland.

She has two adult sons and is expecting her first Grandchild in Spring 2024. She is currently a non-practicing Registered Nurse training to be an Indigenous Counselor & preparing to write a book. Dawn occasionally instructs acrylic painting workshops and other creative classes for organizational groups, which she enjoys.

Dawn was diagnosed with PH due to left-sided heart disease and lung disease in 2019 and plans to use her experience to build a part-time career in creative wellness. As a PHA Canada Ambassador, one of Dawn's goals is to help ensure Indigenous patients and communities have the information and support they need.
