School Resource Guide

Helping children with PH and their families navigate life at school

This guide is designed to educate your child’s teachers and school staff about pulmonary hypertension (PH). PHA Canada recommends contacting your child’s school before the academic year begins to schedule a meeting with school staff who will work with your child. Those staff may include teachers, school nurses, office employees, and others. Before the meeting, use this guide to create a personalized overview of your child’s medical needs. Then ask each of your child’s educators and school staff to review it.

Your Guide includes the following documents:

Fill out the forms to customize the documents for your child. Print copies for each staff member who will work regularly with your child. Provide extra copies for substitute teacher information packets.

In the meeting with your child’s school staff, consider:

  • Providing a brief overview of PH and your child’s normal symptoms.

  • Demonstrating your child’s medication and equipment (if your child has complex medications with IV pumps, consider asking your specialty pharmacy if they can help with the demonstration).

  • Discussing the circumstances when the school should contact your child’s the primary care physician, PH physician, or nurse.

  • Review your child’s Individualized Education Plans.

We hope this Guide will help others better understand PH and your child's unique needs. If you have questions about this information, please contact your PH physician or nurse. For more information about this Guide or other PHA Canada resources, contact info@phacanada.ca or call 604-682-1036.

We wish your child a happy and successful school year!
