What is PH?
Pulmonary hypertension is a rare and potentially fatal lung disease for which there is no cure. It is a condition that affects the arteries of the lungs, hindering the flow of blood and oxygen to the heart. People living with PH suffer from continuous high blood pressure in the lungs, which results in an enlargement of the heart. If left untreated, this will often lead to a weakness of the ride-side of the heart, a serious type of heart failure. PH can strike anyone. It typically affects people between 20 and 60 years of age, but PH can also affect children and the elderly.
In patients with certain types of PAH (the most severe type of PH), patients live on average 2-3 years, if left untreated. Early diagnosis is very important. This is why we need to #PaintCanadaPurple to raise awareness about PH on World PH Day.
On May 5, more than 80 organizations around the world will participate in World PH Day activities to raise awareness of this frequently misdiagnosed disease and celebrate the lives of people living with PH.

Wear purple, dress your pet up in purple, decorate your house in purple... anything to help us Paint Canada Purple for World PH Day! Don't forget to post it on social media with the hashtags #PaintCanadaPurple #WorldPHDay #WorldPHDay2020.
Since 2014, thanks to the efforts of the PH community, monuments have been illuminated in periwinkle purple on May 5th from coast-to-coast. This has included such landmarks as: BC Place (Vancouver); Calgary Tower (Calgary); High Level Bridge (Edmonton); CN Tower (Toronto); Niagara Falls (Niagara); Ottawa Heritage Building (Ottawa); Olympic Tower (Montreal), and City Hall (Halifax)!
This year, BC Place and Canada Place (Vancouver), the High Level Bridge (Edmonton), Niagara Falls (Niagara), and more will be illuminated!
To ensure that Canada shines brightly in periwinkle purple on May 5, 2021, please help us by sending requests for monuments to be illuminated in your area. The earlier you send your request, the better!
Click here to download our illumination request letter template. This letter is a general request to illuminate a monument. It will only take you a moment to customise it to your monument and your location.
